Dudes got expenses; Rent to Monty, even it is sent in late, on the 10th or later. He's gotta gas for Betsy, to Drive Around. He's got Bowling Fees to pay, there's Weed, and .... Dudes got expenses. So he Cooks, like practicing Tai Chi, Cooking is sort of Zen to the Dude. He likes it, and it helps him save Money, getting the most out of his unemployment funds.
